You didn’t wake up one day and decide to feel this way.
You didn’t choose the tension in your shoulders that never quite goes away. You didn’t choose the sleep that comes in fragments, the irritability that rises faster than you’d like, or the exhaustion that a good night’s rest doesn’t seem to fix.
And yet — here you are.
Wound up. Worn down. Wondering why your body won’t just calm down.
If that’s you, I want you to keep reading. Because what I’m about to share might be the first time someone has put words to something you’ve been feeling for a very long time.
Your Body Is Not Broken
The first thing I want you to know is this:
You are not broken. You are not dramatic. You are not weak.
What you are — is a woman whose nervous system has been working overtime. And there is a very real, very valid reason for that.
Your nervous system is not malfunctioning. It is doing exactly what it was designed to do.
It is responding.
The question worth asking — and the one most people never think to ask — is what is it responding to?
So What Does a Dysregulated Nervous System Actually Feel Like?
It doesn’t always look the way you’d expect.
It’s not always panic attacks or obvious anxiety. Sometimes it’s quieter than that. Subtler. So woven into your daily life that you’ve started to think it’s just who you are.
Here’s what it can feel like:
🌀 In Your Body
- Tension that lives in your shoulders, jaw, or chest — even when nothing is technically wrong
- Sleep that won’t come, or sleep that comes but doesn’t restore you
- Waking up at 3am with your mind already racing
- Periods that are heavier, more painful, or more irregular than they used to be
- A low hum of anxiety that runs underneath everything
- Headaches, digestive issues, chronic fatigue that doctors can’t quite explain
- Feeling physically exhausted but mentally unable to switch off
🌀 In Your Emotions
- Irritability that rises faster than you want it to
- Feeling overwhelmed by things that didn’t used to bother you
- Crying without knowing exactly why
- A short fuse with the people you love most
- Feeling numb, disconnected, or like you’re going through the motions
- Reacting and then immediately wondering — why did I respond like that?
🌀 In Your Relationships and Your World
- Feeling like you have to manage everyone else’s emotions while yours go unmet
- Conversations that feel tense, confusing, or like you’re always defending yourself
- Swallowing what you really want to say because it doesn’t feel safe to say it
- Shrinking. Becoming quieter. Taking up less space than you used to.
- Feeling like your feelings don’t matter — or that expressing them only makes things harder
- Smiling when you want to scream
Does any of that sound familiar?
Here’s What Nobody Tells You
Your nervous system does not live in a vacuum.
It is in constant conversation with your environment. The people around you. The relationships you’re in. The emotional climate of your home, your workplace, your closest connections.
When your environment feels safe — when you feel heard, understood, and valued — your nervous system can rest. It can move out of survival mode and into a state where healing, connection, and joy are actually possible.
But when your environment feels unsafe — even in ways that are hard to name — your nervous system responds accordingly.
And emotional unsafety is still unsafety.
Feeling unheard is still a threat. Feeling like your feelings don’t matter is still a threat. Feeling like you have to shrink yourself to keep the peace — that is still a threat. And your body is taking notes on all of it.
What Happens When Feelings Have Nowhere to Go
Here is something I want you to sit with for a moment.
When we don’t feel safe expressing what we feel — when every attempt to share is met with confusion, dismissal, or shutdown — we stop trying.
We go quiet.
We tell ourselves it’s fine. We push it down. We move on.
But the feeling doesn’t disappear. It doesn’t just evaporate because we decided not to talk about it.
It stays. In the body.
Unexpressed emotion has to go somewhere. And over time, that somewhere is your physical body. The tension that won’t release. The sleep that won’t come. The symptoms that seem to have no clear cause.
Your body has been holding what your voice was not allowed to say.
That is not weakness. That is not you being too sensitive.
That is your body doing the only thing it knew how to do — surviving an environment that didn’t feel safe.
The Shift That Changes Everything
The moment everything began to change for me — and for the women I work with — was not a dramatic overhaul.
It was a moment of recognition.
Oh. My body isn’t broken. It’s been responding to something real.
That single shift — from what is wrong with me to what has my body been trying to tell me — is where healing begins.
Not fixing. Not forcing. Not pushing through.
Just getting curious. Getting quiet. And learning to listen to the signals your body has been sending all along.
